The MSc Advanced Practice is a two-year part-time modular programme, which is designed to:

* facilitate the development of a range of multi-professional Advanced Practitioners, who will be fit for practice, fit for purpose and fit for award
* offer a dynamic and quality postgraduate educational experience relevant to Advanced Practitioners
* facilitate practitioners to utilise higher-level critical, analytical and reflective skills within academic and practice environments
* enable practitioners to be cognisant of the holistic nature of advanced practice and to gain comprehensive higher-level knowledge, expertise and the individual qualities necessary to work as autonomous, competent practitioners within unpredictable professional environments
* enable practitioners to innovate and apply contributions to the evidence base of practice and communicate conclusions clearly
* continue to develop the practitioners´ skills in collaborative practice and the partnership delivery of care and to consider the impact of their professional role within the organisation and wider context
* develop originality and sound judgement in leadership and facilitation skills, which will enable practitioners to implement best practice in service delivery
* fulfil the dynamic nature of health care and enable practitioners to influence the strategic planning and delivery of government agendas.

The programme seeks to recognise the process of life-long learning, providing an award of Advanced Practice in a named route. There is a strong emphasis on the integration between theory and practice, with practice as the main focus and measure of the role and quality of the Advanced Practitioner. Theory is seen as providing not only the foundation for practice, but also contributing to the generation of practice initiatives. It will also promote the extension of professional roles and therefore the development of a critically reflective and responsive practitioner.

The programme aims to provide a student-centred, multi-professional, dynamic and quality educational experience that will be instrumental in changing and developing health care delivery, and in producing practitioners who will be leaders of their profession.

Contents

Students can select from five pathways that reflect their area of practice:

* Clinical Practice (Three modules: Clinical Examination Skills; Diagnostic and Health Assessment; Advanced Practice in Health Care)
* Safeguarding Children and Young People (Three modules: Supporting Children, Young People and their Families; The Continuum of Need; Reshaping Policy for Children, Young People and their Families)
* Mental Health (Choosing three of four modules: Advanced Community Practice; Cognitive Behavioural Interventions; Contemporary Issues in Acute Mental Health Care; Observing Diversity in Mental Health)
* Learning Disability (Three modules: Supporting People with Profound and Multiple Learning Disabilities; Socio-Political Themes in Learning Disability; Developmental Perspectives on Learning Disability)
* Palliative Care (Choosing three of four modules: Complex Symptom Management; Communication and Collaboration in Palliative Care; Organisation and Management of Palliative Care; Education in Palliative Care)

On successful completion of three specialist modules from a named pathway, consisting of 60 credits, students may exit with a Postgraduate Certificate in Advanced Practice.

Students progressing to MSc/Postgraduate Diploma will undertake a further two core modules plus an optional module. The core modules are:

* Inter-professional Practice
* Research

The optional module may be taken from across the University provision, providing it carries the required credits. Examples are: Self-Review; Leadership; Mentorship; Teaching in Clinical Practice.

On successful completion of all taught modules, students may exit with a Postgraduate Diploma Advanced Practice in the named route: e.g. Postgraduate Diploma Advanced Practice (Learning Disability).

Completion of all of the taught modules plus a Dissertation module will result in the MSc award.

Assessment

Assessment will centre on both theory and practice elements of the module, reflecting the emphasis on being an advanced practitioner. Practice outcomes will be formulated by negotiation between the student, their mentor and the module leader, and the student will be assessed against meeting the outcomes. Theory outcomes will be assessed through a variety of methods relevant to the nature of the module, e.g. an Objective Structured Clinical Examination in Clinical Examination Skills, a literature review for Socio-Political Themes in Learning Disability.
