Our Graduate School was established in 2004 in order to enhance both the experience of postgraduate research students and the nature and quality of the service and support provided to them within a thriving research environment. The Graduate School is responsible for all matters pertaining to the admission, registration, training and monitoring of postgraduate research students, and serves as a focus for both students and supervisory staff.
Research Degrees
We offer you opportunities to undertake Master of Philosophy (MPhil) and Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) awards. These are assessed on the basis of a thesis reporting individual research, and involve a substantial research training component, provided by our Graduate School.
There are currently over 115 postgraduate students pursuing research with us. They are based in (but not restricted to) the departments of Biological Sciences, Business, Computer Science and Information Systems, Education and Children´s Services, English, Fine Art, Geography and Development Studies, the Learning and Teaching Institute, History and Archaeology, Mathematics, Health and Social Care, Performing Arts, Psychology, Social and Communication Studies, Sport and Exercise Sciences, and Theology and Religious Studies. We welcome applications for both full-time or part-time study. Applicants wishing to study part time should make clear their reasons for wishing to do so.
Studying for an MPhil or PhD is very much an individual activity, and research topics vary widely according to personal interests. We offer access to modern, well-equipped laboratories and library facilities, and are also able to support prospective students in developing their research proposals.
You are normally required to take an English Proficiency Test.
Most European Universities recognise the IELTS test.
Take testApplicants should normally have, or expect to obtain, at least an upper second class honours degree in a discipline appropriate to their intended area of research. Substantial prior research experience may, in some instances, be acceptable in place of a first degree qualification. International students must provide evidence of English proficiency .
