This programme seeks to explain why wars occur, to highlight how warfare has changed through the ages, and to show how the military interacts with wider human society. These issues will principally be addressed through the study of British military history, both within the European context and the wider world. The broad historical narrative will provide students with the opportunity to explore specific military themes in depth, to contribute to the wider academic debate on the relationship between the military and society, and to conduct original research.
The County of Cheshire and the City of Chester have had a long association with the British military, and there is a comprehensive range of relevant and accessible source material relating to the study of military history and warfare deposited locally and within the easily accessible North West region.
