The programme is ideal for those who recognise the potential of learning through work and are prepared to assume a high degree of responsibility for their own learning. It offers flexible and adaptable study for those seeking professional development opportunities, and for whom customised programmes relating directly to the work setting are the most effective way of achieving their objectives.

Typically, it allows participants to negotiate their own pathway of learning related to their area(s) of working practice, and to choose a relevant award title.

The Work Based and Integrative Studies programme also facilitates co-operation with businesses and organisations, whereby corporately negotiated programmes of staff development may be delivered in the workplace, assessed in co-operation with the University of Chester, and employees awarded academic credit for their learning achievements.

Contents

A typical programme will begin with Self Review and Negotiation of Learning. This enables participants to undertake a self audit and complete a claim for prior learning (if appropriate) where learning in the workplace can be rewarded academically. The module also provides the opportunity for needs analysis and action planning in order to enable students to successfully create a pathway of study and award title that meets their learning needs.

Participants then follow their individually tailored study programme, which will include a module on Work Based Research Methods as preparation for study in the work context. Negotiated programmes may include taught modules from one or more discipline areas combined with projects in the workplace. Popular taught modules currently undertaken by WBIS students include Conflict Transformation, Effective Workplace Teams, Transition and Change Management, Communication Skills and Stress Management.
