The Research Master in Art History and Archaeology is a two-year programme in Material Culture Studies in Art, Architecture and Archaeology. The basis for all programme courses is the material cultural heritage of the Western and Mediterranean World from the prehistoric period to the present. This unique programme provides specialist training in historical and anthropological approaches to landscape and settlements, artefacts and ecofacts, and architectural and art objects.
The aim of the Research Master´s programme in Art History and Archaeology is to train students in the theory and methodology of material culture studies from several disciplinary and technical perspectives, and to create an awareness of the specific responsibilities that face academics today with regard to the historical study, conservation, restoration and public presentation of cultural heritage. The programme familiarizes students with techniques for translating these responsibilities into fundamental research, analytical reports and interesting exhibitions.
Students acquire significant experience in field research in the Netherlands and abroad, as well as training in conservation and restoration. This multidisciplinary programme involves the Visual Arts, Architecture and Planning History, the Prehistory and Protohistory of Northwest Europe, and Classical and Mediterranean Archaeology (including Greece, Italy and Egypt). Within the general framework of this Research Master´s programme, students can choose a specialization that is in line with their own interests, expertise and academic background.
The programme prepares students for:
* further study and training with a view to writing a successful PhD thesis
* a position as an independent researcher in the public or private sector (academic or applied research).
* other relevant positions with academic requirements.
