Postgraduate students play an important part in the life of the Department of French and Francophone Studies at the University of Nottingham. As well as including a number of students who took their first degree in Nottingham, the postgraduate community in the Department has included students from the United States, from Africa, from France, Belgium and from a number of universities in the UK. Our students represent a wide spectrum, in terms of background, race, age, class, culture and creed.
The Department is relatively large compared to other modern-language departments in the UK. This allows us to maintain a very wide range of disciplines within the area of French and Francophone Studies. We aim to sustain both vertical and horizontal range: we have a specialist in the Medieval period, a number of specialists in the Renaissance and Early Modern period, as well as a broad horizontal spread in the

This course offers students the chance to undertake research in any field for which we can offer supervision, as outlined on the Departmental web page. It is an ideal preparation for entry onto a PhD programme, but may equally appeal to students wishing to undertake one year´s postgraduate study. Students agree a programme of study with their supervisor(s) which leads to the preparation of a 30,000-word dissertation. Together with other MA students they also follow a module in Research Skills (generic and subject-specific methodology).
