Classical, Medieval and Renaissance Studies is a two year research master in the histories, literatures and cultures of Europe and the Middle East. Its central aim is to provide advanced research training to selected students of high intellectual merit, and prepare them for possible subsequent PhD research. Students each follow their own individual program of advanced courses tailored to their interests and requirements.

These may include specialist tutorials by expert academic staff on specific techniques and skills, periods of study abroad, but also joint courses on theory and method. The culmination of this alteration between disciplinary and interdisciplinary study will be to write a substantial MA dissertation during the last six months of the course - to demonstrate both technical proficiency at a competitive level, and conceptual originality and breadth of vision.

That wider vision should result, in particular, from the intellectual culture of comparative cultural and historical analysis afforded by the proximity of scholars and students of neighbouring disciplines so amply provided by the integration of classical, medieval and renaissance studies of both Europe and the Middle East into one programme of advanced study of histories, literatures and cultures.

The strong emphasis on research makes this programme an ideal stepping stone to a higher degree in any of the individual disciplines, but it also provides you with intellectual experiences and research skills that you can use in other careers that are open to humanities students in the public or private sector.

Classical, Medieval and Renaissance Studies (CMRS) is a two-year Research Master´s degree programme in the histories, literatures and cultures of Classical Antiquity, the Middle Ages, and of Early Modern Europe and the Middle East. These disciplines have been brought together in a flexible and attractive Master´s programme which combines the strong points of the individual disciplines with the benefits of a multidisciplinary environment.

The programme offers four recognizable academic profiles:

* Greek and Latin
* Ancient History
* Medieval and Early Modern History
* Languages and Literatures of the Middle Ages and the Renaissance

The unique Groningen approach allows you to embed your chosen discipline in wider diachronic or synchronic fields:

* Classical Studies (Greek, Latin, Ancient History)
* Medieval and Renaissance Studies (Medieval History, English etc...)
* Languages and cultures of the older periods (Greek, Latin, English, Romance Languages, Dutch, Hebrew, Arabic)
* Pre-modern History (Ancient, Medieval and Early Modern History)

This programme offers you a thorough training in the core issues, theories and methods of your own discipline, but it also accustoms you to work in, and draw inspiration from, a challenging multidisciplinary research environment.

The programme has four elements:

- In the first year of the Research MA programme, students follow Core Modules (i.e. research modules) designed to broaden their knowledge of the discipline, acquaint them with the latest methods and techniques and teach them to use primary sources; they will also perform specific research assignments.

- Students also follow two In-depth Modules designed to teach them to apply what they have learned in the Core Modules in a multidisciplinary context, to acquire the skills required to take part in intellectual debate (In-depth Modules).

- In the second year of the Research MA programme, students follow a specialisation module consisting of 3 tutorials of 10 ECTS each, in order to gain practical research experience - under supervision.

- Students then write an MA thesis. In a series of Master´s Thesis classes, students will write a thesis on their chosen area of specialisation. These classes will be led by two senior lecturers. Students discuss parts of their thesis and receive feedback on their work. They also have the opportunity to discuss questions and problems with each other. These meetings will also be used to comment on research proposals and to practice writing research proposals.
