Linguistics is a rapidly growing field, in which new methods of analysis are being used to study our patterns of speech and the way our brain employs and organizes them.
Language is a central topic in cognitive science, computer science and the study of human behaviour, and linguistics is the field that most directly deals with it. Language can be studied in many ways: by analyzing texts or computer corpora, by listening to people speaking, by introspection, by measuring properties of sound waves in the lab, or by investigating brain activity in healthy or aphatic speakers or hearers.
In the programme language acquisition, neuro-imaging, and linguistic analysis at different levels from sounds to interaction is studied in depth. The aim of this two-year programme is to familiarize students with the basic tenets, terms, theories and methods of modern linguistics and to bring them to the point where they can fruitfully contribute to linguistic research of their own, for example as PhD students.
The programme prepares students for:
* further study and training with a view to writing a successful PhD thesis.
* a position as an independent researcher in the public or private sector (academic or applied research).
* other relevant positions with academic requirements.
In the first semester of the first year of the degree programme, all students take compulsory modules. During the first year there is also ample opportunity for personal choices.
The Research MA in Linguistics has two specializations, depending on the admission procedure and the choice of optional modules:
- Linguistics
- Language and Communication Technologies (Erasmus Mundus)
In the Linguistics specialization students can choose optional modules to expand their knowledge and familiarize themselves with the various subfields of linguistics. In the second year follows specialization and a focus on one of the subfields of linguistics in which the CLCG has expertise. Admission to the Linguistics specialization is on the basis of a selection procedure by the Admissions Board of the Research MA.
The Language and Communication Technologies (LCT) specialization is an Erasmus Mundus European Master´s programme. The LCT specialization was designed in cooperation with the universities of Saarland, Bozen-Bolzano, Malta, Nancy and Prague. Students who follow this specialization in Groningen spend a year at one of the participating universities abroad as well as a year in Groningen. The optional modules in this specialization concern language technology, computational and theoretical linguistics and computer science. Admission to the LCT specialization has been delegated to an international committee, of which the coordinator of the LCT specialization in Groningen is a member. This committee also determines the allocation of successful students to the participating universities.
Students of the Linguistics and Language and Communication Technologies (LCT) specializations follow the same compulsory programme. In addition, they can select optional modules, which may also overlap. Because students of the LCT specialization spend an entire year at a different, foreign university, they do not follow a research internship abroad.
You are normally required to take an English Proficiency Test.
Most European Universities recognise the IELTS test.
