This MSc programme is renowned amongst UK and international fluid power industries for producing graduates with the desired technical and managerial skills and expertise.

This is largely due to the reputation of our Centre for Power Transmission and Motion Control (PTMC) for industrially relevant research, consultancy and postgraduate training. The Fluid Power Engineering MSc programme is based on this very research expertise.

The continuing professional development (CPD) units of this specialist programme attract professionals from industry as does the annual Fluid Power Symposium, ensuring excellent career networking opportunities during your studies.

You will complete your MSc through an individual research project under the supervision of our eminent PTMC research fellows and academic staff across the entire department.

Projects can include a mixture of experimental/computational/analytical evaluations.

Collaborative working

The programme includes traditionally taught subject-specific units and business and group-orientated modular work. These offer you the chance to gain experience in design, project management and creativity, while working with students from other subjects.

Contents

Semester 1 (October-January)
* The first semester core units cover the fundamentals of hydraulic circuits and components, the principles of component selection and an introduction to control for electrohydraulic systems.
* Five taught units (three compulsory and two options)
* Includes coursework involving laboratory or small project sessions
* Typically each unit consists of 22 hours of lectures, may involve a number of hours of tutorials/exercises and laboratory activity and approximately 70 hours of private study (report writing, laboratory results processing and revision for examinations)
* Advanced optional units introduce you to experimental control system design methods and engineering measurement software packages.

Semester 2 (February-May)

* The second semester offers a unique learning environment, focusing on your career development as a business manager. Through units delivered in partnership with the School of Management, and industrial design group work, you will gain key skills and experience in commercialising new technology and understanding technology strategy and organisation.
* Individual Project preliminary work
* Group projects in which students work in a multi-disciplinary team to solve a conceptual design problem, just as an industrial design team would operate.
* Management/Research modules, studied jointly with Management and Innovation students in the Bath School of Management and Engineering Doctorate students based in industry.
* The semester aims to develop your professional understanding of engineering in a business environment and is taught by academic staff with extensive experience in industry.

Summer/Dissertation Period (June-September)

Individual project leading to MSc dissertation

Depending on the chosen area of interest, the individual project may involve theoretical and/or experimental activities; for both such activities students can use the department computer suites and well-equipped and newly refurbished laboratories for experimental work. The individual projects are generally carried out under the supervision of a member of academic staff. A number of industrially-based projects are available to students.
