This Research Master´s programme in Modern History and International Relations trains you to do independent academic research in the fields of modern and contemporary history and international relations.

It does so by intensively acquainting you with the most recent developments of modern history and international relations, with specific attention to the relevant theoretical and methodological backgrounds in the following fields:

* History of Politics and Governance
* Urban and Regional Social and Economic History
* History of Cultural Identity
* Security and Theory of International Relations
* International Political Economy
* European Cooperation and Integration
* International Order and Global Governance

This Research Master´s programme aims to offer the best basis for future research and for developing your own scientific personality in an interdisciplinary academic environment. You will be challenged to maximally explore and develop your talents. Intensive contact between students and lecturers will further contribute to this aim.

The programme prepares you for:

* writing a successful PhD thesis in order to obtain, for example, a tenure position at a university
* a position as an independent researcher in the public or private sector (academic or applied research)
* other relevant positions with academic requirements.

Contents

The programme has a total study load of 120 ECTS, which equals two years of fulltime study. Central focus of the programme is a combination of integrated courses and a consistent curriculum in order to enhance the academic specialisation and the knowledge, understanding and application of research theories and methodologies. This is done by relating the theory of history to the theory of international relations in an in-depth course on theory and historiography, and by examining trends, schools, key-authors and key-publications from both disciplines in a special ReMa research module.

In addition students are free to choose research modules from a variety of alternatives. Students are required to write an essay for each of these research modules which correspond with the seven different specializations of the Research MA.

The second year begins with an internship, preferably abroad or at another Dutch university or research institute, in order to acquaint the students with skills and research techniques that may add a new and extra dimension to what is offered to them in Groningen. Students are free to choose the institution for their internship themselves, albeit in consultation with the Director of Studies of the Research MA. In their internship students are expected to closely cooperate with scholars whose work is of specific interest to them. When trying to find their way elsewhere, students can make use of the extensive networks of their teachers in Groningen.

The tutorials which are written during the internship serve as basis for the MA thesis and will be discussed at the Research Seminar at the end of the first semester of the second year. The MA thesis, based on hitherto unexplored source material, is the last part of the Research MA and concludes the second year. The MA thesis will be used as the basis for writing a research proposal for a PhD project - and in this way anticipates the writing of a dissertation.

The basic structure of the Research MA in Modern History and International Relations as set out above consists of the following course modules:

* research modules for acquiring more specialist knowledge and research skills by conducting research and by developing insight into certain themes. The outcome must be presented in the form of a publication-ready article-length text. These research modules can be selected from the total supply of research modules in the Faculty of Arts, the Faculty of Law, the Faculty of Religion, the Faculty of Philosophy and the Faculty of Social Sciences.
* in-depth modules to acquire the necessary theoretical and methodological stock-in-trade to be able independently to conduct responsible academic research. These modules are ReMa-specific
* a specialisation phase aiming at learning the students how to conduct research independently. This is organised in the form of a research internment, preferably outside Groningen. In order to guarantee that students obtain research training in a structured way and to guarantee quality of the supervision the phase consists of three separate components, seminars and/or tutorials of 10 ECTS each. One of these, comprising a proposal for the Ma-thesis, will be presented in a research seminar at the end of year 2, semester 1, with presentations of all participants before an audience of senior staff
* room to independently formulate a research proposal and design and execute academic research in the form of an MA thesis

Each of these modules has its own didactic approach - individual and group presentations of propositions and papers, debates, tutorial essays on theory and methodology, individual learning and testing methods.
