The Master´s degree programme in Education, Educational Effectiveness and Instructional Design, is an English language version of a highly regarded Dutch Master´s degree programme, adapted to international students. It was established in response to the increasing interest in the educational expertise available at the University of Groningen, evident by the high demand for international educational consultancies and research projects led by our academics and staff.
The programme is interdisciplinary with the core curriculum choices offered within the Faculty of Behavioural and Social Sciences. Depending upon student interest and thesis topics, co-operation with other faculties regarding topics such as history of European education, information technology, research analysis & statistical techniques or the economics of education is possible.
Our Master´s Programme in Educational Sciences is developed for those who intend to make their career in educational policy, research and practice at a senior level. Career prospects for our graduates are as diverse as the students we attract; the programme is flexible and can be applied to all sectors of public and private education and training as well as to students´ own fields of endeavour. The programme is especially interesting for those who are already working as educational professionals and who would like to expand their basic knowledge and research skills.
Career prospects
* A career in educational policy, research and practice at a senior level
* Careers in all sectors of public and private education and training
* The programme is ideal for those who are already working as educational professionals and who would like to expand their knowledge base and research skills
* The programme is especially interesting for extending professional capacity in education, for example in the areas of research, learning and instructional design, policy and curriculum development, history of education, educational management and accountability
The Programme includes core modules from two of the main strands of the Dutch Master programme most suited for International students.
The first semester is reserved for statistical, methodological and theoretical deepening and concentrates on educational theory and practice. This semester must be completed by all students.
Successful completion of the core modules (curriculum, learning and instruction, organizational management) is required in order to continue the programme. At the end of the first semester a choice of one optional module is offered. Students can select from courses including Capita Selecta Educational Policy and the Century of the Child.
During the six-month specialization phase, students can select from `majors´/specializations including:
* Curriculum Theory & Design
* History of Education
* Comparative/International Education
* Adult/Workplace Education
* Didactics & the Theory of Learning
* Research, Analysis & Statistical Techniques
The last phase of the programme is the research component, where the student is required to write a Master´s thesis, supervised by a member of the academic staff within the Faculty of Behavioural and Social Sciences. It is expected that students will have some idea of a possible thesis topic, even if it is not yet sufficiently specific, before they begin the programme and certainly during the specialization phase.
Because of the comparative and international nature of the programme, ideally theses will be researched in the student´s home country and concentrate upon a particular matter of interest to educational policy or theory in that country.
