What determines success and failure in achievement situations (work, school, sport)? How do groups perceive themselves in relation to other groups? Why do people stereotype? What is the influence of family, neighbourhoods, peers, and school on the development of pro- and antisocial behaviour among youth? What are the effects of new approaches in junior and higher education? Which method of analysis is most appropriate to which data problem? These are only a few of the scientific topics that represent the five specializations within the Research Master´s programme `Behaviour and Social Sciences'.
The training focuses on research in various fields within the behavioural and social sciences: Education, Sociology, Social and Organizational Psychology, Developmental Psychology, Psychometrics and Statistics. Students acquire their knowledge, skills and attitudes by following courses and by participation in one of the research groups. To broaden the scope of the students, external traineeships are also part of the programme.
These activities will prepare for the writing of a Master thesis. In combination with the work on their thesis, students can also prepare a research proposal for a subsequent PhD project for which they can apply. Students will each have a personal supervisor, who will be an excellent researcher him or herself. This supervisor will guide the students during their studies and help them to make choices concerning the Master´s degree program and career planning.
The programme is designed primarily for highly talented, motivated and ambitious students who are interested in pursuing a career in scientific research.
The two-year (120 ECTS) English language Research Master´s programme in Behavioural and Social Sciences is the product of a long-standing collaboration within the Faculty between a number of research groups in Psychology, Sociology, and Educational Sciences. The binding factor between these groups is that they all are interested in social behaviour in institutional and cultural contexts, and that they all focus on methodologically and theoretically advanced research on applied problems. The programme prepares students for a PhD position and is therefore part of the Graduate School for Behavioural and Social Sciences.
The purpose of the Research Master´s Programme in Behavioural and Social Sciences is to qualify students to conduct scientific research through thorough training in advanced theories and methods aimed at knowledge, skills, and understanding. In this Research Master´s programme, there is a strong focus on the development of scientific and academic skills. Accordingly, graduates are well prepared for PhD positions and careers as research scientists, primarily in academia, but also for research positions in public or private organizations.
To give Research Master´s students a real opportunity to join the PhD programme of the Graduate School for Behavioural and Social Sciences, each year a number of PhD scholarships are funded by the Faculty. These scholarships are awarded for four years.
Research Master´s students choose a specialization that represents one or more research programmes within the Faculty. Together with their supervisor, students determine the focus of their individual programme of study in such a way that it highly suits their ambition, talents and interests.
The specializations are:
The programme consists of the following compulsory modules for all specializations (total of 85 ECTS):
You are normally required to take an English Proficiency Test if you come from a non-English speaking country.
