The Master´s degree programme is based on the latest economic theories. Students learn how the economy functions within society, and how economic theory can help to find solutions to current issues, such as whether the national government complies with EU budget regulations, how nanotechnology can help countries to develop, and whether a `fat tax´ will help to make people more healthy.
The MSc in Economics is designed to be an internationally competitive, high-quality Master´s degree programme. The international character is demonstrated by the fact that English is the teaching language - as it is for the Bachelor´s programme - and that acclaimed, highly respected international literature is used. In addition to the best available international manuals, the various modules work with articles from prominent journals in order to keep up with the latest developments.
Many types of companies recruit Economics graduates. In the past, it was thought that economists were only employed by government bodies. But nothing could be further from the truth.
Some examples of career opportunities for graduates in (general) Economics:
* Financial institutions (banks), pension funds and insurance companies;
* NMa, the Netherlands Competition Authority;
* Companies such as Shell, Unilever, Philips, and Gasunie;
* Universities in the Netherlands and abroad.
The first semester is devoted to the main subjects chosen for the programme.
In the second semester, students write a Master´s thesis (20 EC). The subjects for the first semester are Macroeconomics (10 EC) and Markets and Competition (10 EC). 10 EC must be selected from the four other courses offered by the study programme, and 10 EC can be elected more freely.
