Technology plays an important role in our society. Firms and organizations need to focus on the use of new product and process technology in order to meet customer needs. There is consequently a great need for managers who are able to manage technological innovations within firms and service organizations.
The Master concentrates on teaching you the knowledge and skills you will need to effectively manage technological innovations. The programme will focus in particular on industrial products and processes. You will acquire a thorough knowledge of technology, markets, products, the production process and organization, and other subjects.
The programme is made up of compulsory modules such as Technology and the Market and Innovation in Process and Product Technology, and a number of optional modules. In the Integration module and the final project you will conduct a literature search and also work on improving your management skills. The research will be conducted partly in a company and partly at the Faculty.
Graduates usually end up in technical-organizational positions. These include product manager, innovation consultant, project manager for innovations in products and production, marketing staff for technological products or product development manager. These positions are found in the chemical industry, the metalworking and steel industry, engineering, the food processing industry, banking, insurance and small and medium-sized businesses.
The programme consists of four basic modules, two integration modules, two elective modules and a Master´s project. The basic modules (`Advanced Product & Service Development and Information Management´ and `Process Innovation and Operation Excellence´) focus on management options with regard to product and process innovations, and address the question of `what to offer´ and `what to produce´.
Financial and organizational/social issues are dealt with in the modules `Management Accounting for Technological Innovation´ and `Social System Analysis of Technological Innovations´. These two modules address the questions `what does it cost?´ and `how to organize´.
Integration is an important theme in the Master of Science in Technology Management. The programme includes two integrative modules. The `Strategic Management of Technology´ module is designed to train students in the strategic positioning and assessment of technological innovations (the keyword in this course is `recognize´). The second integrative module is Technology Business Plan, which puts students in the role of a technology manager by developing a technology business plan for a real situation (the keyword in this course is `do´). This module also includes training in a number of essential communication skills. Within the integrative modules, students apply the knowledge acquired in the four basic modules to practical situations.
Students also choose two elective modules in order to develop an individual study profile. The final Master´s thesis must demonstrate the student´s ability to conduct research in the area of Technology Management.
