The MBI program is delivered through a cooperation between VGU and the European University Viadrina.

The MBI program was initially developed in English under a grant by the German Federal Ministry for Education and Research in the program "New media in education". Starting in summer semester 2010, the MBI program can be studied as a German language program as well.

Summary The International Master of Business Informatics (MBI) is a joint international program by a network of recognized experts, all of whom are professors at well-known universities in Central Europe. The focus of this program is on the synergy between information technology (IT) and management. Business Informatics (BI) students learn how to use IT effectively to develop and manage business solutions for today's global challenges. MBI students can specialize, for example, in enterprise resource planning (ERP) and supply chain management (SCM).

The MBI program can be studied full-time or part-time, either as a 100 % distance-education program or in blended mode. The rationale underlying the distance-education mode is "virtuality". Students can avoid traveling and living expenses by studying at home or at the workplace, even in their home countries. They communicate with lecturers and fellow students via Internet. The MBI program is hosted by the School of Business Informatics which provides a virtual infrastructure for courses and administration. All courses are taught in English.

The MBI program offers a complete course of studies leading to an accredited master's degree. For full-time students the program takes two years (four semesters) to complete, including one semester of internship or project. For part-time students duration is determined as appropriate (see also tuition and course fees).

MBI students need to know essential concepts of business and management. Students with a degree in business administration or a related field can immediately be accepted onto the program. Students with different degrees can also be admitted but they are required to take business courses and/or prove business knowledge (see formal requirements).

Evaluation and exams use a credit-point system. In the distance-education mode, the majority of tests and examinations are done online, not requiring candidates to travel. The final exam, however, is a supervised one.

Modules Modules are online courses (in the distance-education mode) or face-to-face courses (in the blended-learning mode). A typical online course is similar to a conventional study course, taught in a weekly rhythm. This means, for example, that an electronic lecture is held once a week; review questions and exercises in that week refer to the lecture given before. In the full-time program, there are 5 modules per semester.

The curriculum is binding. However, some of the courses a student has to take can depend on his or her background. Students without a business background, i.e. with a degree in a different area, are required to take business courses and/or prove their business knowledge (see formal requirements).

An introductory course in programming is provided and mandatory for students who are novices in the field of informaiton technology.

Practical The practical part consists of an internship of three months or a project of one semester. Students do internships in industrial enterprises or other organizations in accordance with guidelines provided by VGU. Projects are conducted by the professors who teach in the program. A typical project goal is to create a solution for a Business Informatics problem occurring in the real world or a case study.

Master's thesis The master's thesis takes three months to complete if it is written as a full-time job. The duration can be extended to six months if it is written in parallel to doing a project. The thesis is to show that the student is capable of using a scientific methodology to analyze and model complex Business Informatics problems and to develop solutions for such problems.

Examination regulations Formal details of the MBI program in general and of examinations in particular are stipulated in the examination regulations. Evaluation and exams use a credit-point system. In the distance-education mode, the majority of tests and examinations is done online, not requiring candidates to travel. The final exam, however, is a supervised one.

IELTS

You are normally required to take an English Proficiency Test.

Most European Universities recognise the IELTS test.

Requirements

Formal prerequisites for admission to the MBI program are:

* Higher secondary school certificate
* Bachelor's degree or equivalent. If your degree is not in business administration or a business-related field please check the options below.
* For non-native speakers: English language certificate (TOEFL or equivalent).

Details, and additional requirements in certain cases, are specified in the admission process. MBI admission is processed in 4 steps (click for details):

* Electronic application
* Document submission
* Admission and payment
* Enrollment

What does "or equivalent" mean?

Since bachelor's degrees were not common in major parts of the world until a few years ago, candidates with different degrees may be admitted if their degrees are considered equivalent to a bachelor's degree (e.g. FH-Diplom).

Which English language certificate do you need?

Students whose mother tongue is not English must provide a TOEFL certificate. Other tests as listed below are also accepted.

What about a non-business degree?

Candidates with degrees in other fields than business can be admitted. However, they need to prove that they possess elementary business administration knowledge. There are several ways to provide this proof:

* If you have at least two years of working experience in a typical business function (e.g. marketing, controlling, finance; not engineering, software development, etc.) you may submit (a) certificate(s) issued by your employer(s).
* You participate in the business track of the MBI program and pass the two courses Business I and II. This can be done as part of the MBI program or in addition.
* Take business courses provided by any higher-education institution (university level) equivalent to at least 15 credit points in the MBI program. You are advised to check with us before registering if a course you are considering to take will satisfy the requirements.

If you are in doubt whether you fulfill the formal requirements please contact the dean's office at dean-sbi(at)vg-u.de.

Technical requirements Since the MBI program is an online program and all VGU courses are on the Internet you need:

* Access to a reasonably fast Internet connection
* State-of-the-art computing equipment, including a Windows PC, MS Windows 2000/XP/Vista/Windows 7, and a Web camera
* MS Office programs, multimedia plug-ins (e.g. Windows Media Player), Web browser, and communications software

Note that you should have at least 56 kbps Internet access or faster to participate in video-based courses. Less speed will do for other courses but will be less convenient in any case.

Required computer knowledge A minimum level of computer knowledge is required for any SBI course: MS Windows, Excel, Word, Access; navigation in the World Wide Web, downloading files etc.

For the MBI program you need to know programming. If you never learned and used a programming language before you may still enroll; however, the course "Introduction to Programming" will be a compulsory part of your first semester.

Prerequisites for mini programs and for certificate courses are basically the same, i.e. in most cases you will need general PC handling experience and some programming knowledge.

Additional Requirements

Minimal degree required: Bachelor's degree
Minimal amount of work experience Not specified

Language Proficiency

IELTS Band: 6.0
TOEFL Paper-based: 550
TOEFL Computer-based: 213
TOEFL Internet-based: 79
