When you graduate with an LL.M. in International Legal Practice from IE, you have all the tools needed for a career in the international practice of law.
International law firms and company legal departments increasingly demand lawyers with a global perspective. We have designed our LL.M. program and its unique clinical methodology to provide you with the knowledge and skills necessary to move to the next level in your professional development.
You may choose between a program taught 100% in English, or a bilingual program in which half of the classes are taught in Spanish and the other half in English.
The program taught in English provides students with a learning experience that combines international and European law with an MBA module, hands-on experience in an internship in a law firm or company legal department, and writing an LL.M. thesis under faculty supervision.
The LL.M. in International Legal Practice requires students to take a wide variety of core courses to increase their knowledge of international legal and business concepts as well as their ability to apply this knowledge in solving real-life case problems.
The LL.M. in International Legal Practice is a full-time program of postgraduate study which runs for ten months. All classes are held in Madrid. The program combines general coursework in legal and business areas with a broad offering of international electives. The program is structured in three trimesters, plus a preparatory pre-program and optional exchange semester.
MBA Module
The MBA Module which forms an integral part of the LL.M. in International Legal Practice includes courses usually taught as part of a graduate business program, including Economics, Accounting, Strategic Management, Financial Management, Communication Skills and Leadership Workshops.
The objective is to provide law students with broad knowledge of the fundamentals of business management and strategy, so that they will be better able to meet the needs of their future clients in business-related matters.
Method
The IE Case Method used in the LL.M. in International Legal Practice is probably unlike anything you have experienced before in a law classroom. Instead of listening passively to lectures, you will be faced with more than 500 practical case problems over the duration of the program, each one of which requires you and your team to solve a range of legal and business problems and then draft the documents needed to achieve the objectives of your hypothetical client.
The IE Case Method is designed to replicate some three years of professional practice in just 10 intensive months. In most cases, the case problems are inspired by the professional experience of our faculty.
The LL.M. in International Legal Practice requires students to take a wide variety of core courses to increase their knowledge of international legal and business concepts as well as their ability to apply this knowledge in solving real-life case problems.
Elective Courses
At the end of the third trimester, the elective courses allow you to select the courses which most appeal to you. The English program track lets you take two of your electives from among those offered in IE's world-famous International MBA program.
Seminar on International Relations
The Seminar on International Relations is a week-long series of advanced lectures by renowned figures in diverse fields, including politics, business and international relations.
Willem C. Vis International Commercial Arbitration Moot
During the first trimester, students compete for a chance to represent IE at the annual Willem C. Vis International Commercial Arbitration Moot. Students selected for the IE team will compete against some 160 other teams from around the world in an international commercial arbitration competition which takes place each spring in Vienna, Austria.
Lectures and Conference Cycle
Throughout the academic year students will have the opportunity to attend lectures by lawyers from international law firms and in-house legal departments as well as presentations by law firms and companies. This will allow you to learn more about current discussions in the field of international law and gain more exposure to professional opportunities after graduation.
