The Faculty of Philosophy offers a one-year Master´s programme. This programme offers the student the opportunity to pursue subjects that he or she has chosen during the bachelor phase with greater depth and detail. The programme is concluded with a thesis comprising of 30 ECTS (equivalent to six months´ research).
The overall aim of the Master´s programme is to teach students key skills in areas such as oral and written communication, critical analysis, and independent philosophical research.
Career prospects for graduates are very good. About half of the Groningen graduates move on to research or teaching jobs - within institutions for vocational training or high school, but most often within the university system (whether in the Netherlands or in another country).
Owing to the highly favourable evaluation of its research, the Faculty has lately been awarded a large number of PhD positions and post-doctorate research posts. Many other graduates find employment in the media, in education, or in various public and private enterprises such as libraries, publishing houses, trade unions, and local and national government bodies (for example Department of the Interior, Foreign Office).
This programme offers the student the opportunity to pursue subjects that he or she has chosen during the bachelor phase with greater depth and detail. The programme is concluded with a thesis comprising of 30 ECTS (equivalent to six months´ research).
The Faculty consists of four departments: Theoretical Philosophy, Practical Philosophy, Ethics, and History of Philosophy. Master´s students are required to specialize in one of these domains but they may also take courses offered by other departments. In this respect the Master´s programme enhances students´ in-depth knowledge and, at the same time, helps them to acquire an overview of the central debates within the discipline of their choice. They learn to analyse complex arguments and to formulate their own views on philoso phical problems, texts, and debates.
