The purpose of the Research Master programme is to initiate students into the craft of carrying out research in the general area of knowledge and the development of knowledge. The Research Master programme builds on a long-standing collaboration within the faculty between three research groups: History of Philosophy, Practical Philosophy and Theoretical Philosophy. Apart from the courses in these three research groups, special attention is given to learn how to do philosophical research. A seminar, an external traineeship and a research proposal are important parts of the programme.

Career prospects for Master´s graduates are very good. About half of the Groningen graduates move on to research or teaching jobs - within institutions for vocational training or high school, but most often within the university system (whether in the Netherlands or in another country). Owing to the highly favourable evaluation of its research, the Faculty has lately been awarded a large number of PhD positions and post-doctorate research posts.

Many other graduates find employment in the media, in education, or in various public and private enterprises such as libraries, publishing houses, trade unions, and local and national government bodies (for example, the local government and the Department of the Interior, Foreign Office).

Contents

It consists of two years, including a semester spent at a sister faculty of philosophy, a thesis and a research proposal. Tuition is distributed amongst the four departments of the Faculty of Philosophy in Groningen: Theoretical Philosophy, Practical Philosophy, Ethics and History of Philosophy.

Research Master´s students are required to specialize in one of these domains by following courses and conducting in-depth reading. At the same time, students are encouraged to acquire an overview of the central debates within the discipline of their choice and to learn to situate these debates in the wider context of scientific, political, and cultural developments. Students are taught to analyze complex arguments and learn how to formulate their own views on philosophical problems, texts, and debates.

The acquisition of key skills such as oral and written communication, critical analysis and independent philosophical research also plays an important role in the Research Master´s programme. These skills provide the students with an excellent basis for their further careers. Research Master´s graduates often go on to do a Ph.D. in philosophy. Other areas in which our students have excelled include education, journalism, the media, publishing, politics and policymaking.
