Location of Coventry University

International Law examines the rules and principles which govern the relations and dealings between nation states. The programme allows students to explore the primary sources of international law, including customary law and conventional law as well as treaties.

This programme will appeal to those wishing to pursue a career with an international organisation such as the UN and those involved in the legal and diplomatic relations between nation states.

Future prospects include work as international lawyers or with employment in international institutions or academia.
Graduates may enter employment, or achieve promotion, within international or regional organisations specialising in human rights, or aid and development; governmental or non-governmental organisations, or charities.

* Explore a wide range of international law related areas such as international business law, international trade law, and international taxation alongside some of the mainstream topics relating to public international law
* Equips students with a sound understanding of international law and human rights, together with advanced research, analytical and writing skills
* Encourages an appreciation of the relevance of rules and principles in the International Legal environment, particularly in light of the contemporary developments in the world arena
* The course is taught via workshops, lectures and seminars
* Assessment is by coursework, short class-based examinations and presentation of workshop papers
* The course aims to enhance students’ transferable skills and future employment prospects
* Awards of postgraduate certificate and diploma are available and can also form part of a continuing professional development (CPD) programme


Contents

The programme will encourage students to understand the relationship between nation states as well as the duties imposed on nations with respect to individuals. Such duties include the right to respect international human rights and the general right of an individual to receive justice to an international standard. The jurisprudence of the International Court of Justice will be examined along with the place and role of the United Nations.
Students can expect to study areas such as:

* International Law in the Contemporary World Arena

They can then choose from further options such as:

* Children’s Rights
* Criminal Evidence and Inference
* Human Rights in Europe
* International Criminal Law
* International Environmental Law
* Law of Diplomatic Relations
* Prisoners’ Rights
* War, Law and Morality
* Gender and International Law

After success in these modules and in research skills and research design, students proceed to complete a research dissertation on a chosen subject relevant to the programme.

Entry requirements

Applicants should hold a good honours degree in a relevant academic discipline. Applications from candidates with relevant experience will be considered on an individual basis.

Applicants whose first language is not English must have a minimum IELTS 6.5 or TOEFL 600 or equivalent.
