As we embark on the 21st century our lives remain influenced by the dramatic events of the 20th century. This MA programme examines some of the key events and factors which marked that turbulent century, offering an insight into the problems of the present.
Using an historical approach, this programme ranges geographically from Vietnam to Europe in the inter-war years, from the Soviet Union and Russia to post-colonial Africa.
The range of career opportunities for history graduates and postgraduates is well established and is not simply about museum or library work. In fact, these professions take a relatively small proportion of history graduates.
History graduates work in the fields such as management, administration, education, the arts, publishing and the civil service.
* This MA spreads its remit across continents yet focuses clearly on the 20th century and some of the key formative processes and events which have shaped our world.
* Optional modules are available
* History is a key subject that helps to inform our understanding of a rapidly changing world
You will be introduced to the programme through a mandatory module entitled themes and approaches to Twentieth Century History. This module will use the origins of world war one, the Bolshevik revolution, the Holocaust and Britain’s entry into the EEC as areas of debate and analysis to develop those skills you need as you proceed through the course.
Having completed the mandatory module, you will have a choice of modules for example:
* British appeasement and the coming of World War II
* Russian state and society since 1917
* The development of post-colonial African politics
* The Vietnam War
As well as the contest between states, the development of the modern state will be a core element of this programme. Additionally, the clash of ideas, which was a central characteristic of the twentieth century, will feature prominently.
The impact of nationalism, the struggle between Nazism and the liberal democracies, Soviet Communism in its domestic and international settings, and the role of the Superpowers in the post-1945 world will be among the subjects analysed.
You are normally required to take an English Proficiency Test.
Most European Universities recognise the IELTS test.
Take testEntry requirements
For admission to the MA you will normally be expected to have a good undergraduate honours degree. Each application will be considered on its merits.
