The English Teaching in Professional Contexts MA degree provides professional development for English language teachers who are interested in the use of English in the workplace or in academic contexts.
You will develop skills in language description and analysis and have the opportunity to design sample syllabuses and course materials appropriate to the needs of specified groups of language learners, for example those working in international business, tourism, health care, or higher education.
* The course balances theory and practice
* Access to some of the most recent and relevant English language research
* Review and evaluate different approaches to the teaching of English for Specific Purposes (ESP)
* Observe English language classes and undertake teaching practice
* In the final stages of the course you may have the opportunity to complete a (salaried) ten month overseas teaching placement
* Taught by a team consisting of international experts on corpus linguistics, computer assisted language learning, Teaching English as a Foreign Language, discourse and varieties of English (including business English) and second language acquisition
* The final stage can be completed off campus
* Participants may elect to submit a reflective portfolio of their own professional practice instead of a dissertation
* The flexibility of the course enables applicants with recognised ELT qualifications to qualify for some accreditation of prior learning (APL)
Opportunities for English language professionals exist in teaching and management posts in higher and further education, and in international schools, independent tutorial colleges and sixth-form colleges.
There may also be posts in government/civil service positions in relation to staff support and development, curriculum and materials, design and public communications.
Posts in industry and commerce which require a good understanding of the use of language for specific purposes may also require your skills, for example in the fields of publishing, conference organisation, the media, staff support and development.
On the English Language Teaching in Professional Contexts MA degree students will:
* Consider theory and practice relating to the use of English in professional settings, and the teaching and learning of English for professional life
* Develop skills in the evaluation and design of teaching and learning materials for English for Specific Purposes (ESP) and English for Academic Purposes (EAP), including Business English
* Explore the role played by new technologies for learning, teaching and communicating
* Analyse the written and spoken genres of specified discourse communities, for example business meetings, research articles, academic lectures
* Have opportunities to practise teaching and observe experienced teachers in a variety of face to face and blended learning settings
Structure The programme runs over three terms. Students normally take four 15-credit modules in term 1, four 15-credit modules in term 2 and complete a Dissertation or a Professional Practice Portfolio in term 3.
The delivery of the Research Methods module is distributed over the first two terms. Term 3 does not require attendance and students can elect to complete their dissertation/portfolio off-campus. If they do so, they will be supervised online in distance learning mode for this stage of their programme.
Assessment is normally completed at or soon after the end of the ten weeks of teaching for all 15-credit modules.
You are normally required to take an English Proficiency Test.
Most European Universities recognise the IELTS test.
Take testSuccessful applicants must normally hold a Second Class Honours Degree or equivalent. Candidates with degrees in subjects other than English/Linguistics can also apply.
Applicants who can demonstrate considerable experience at an appropriate professional level but who do not have the formal academic entry qualifications may also be admitted, subject to an application and assessment.

Applicants who are not native speakers of English need to have a proficiency level equivalent to GCSE Grade C, or IELTS 6.5 (with a minimum score of 6 in writing) or TOEFL 570-573 (PB); 230 (CB); 88-89 (IB); Cambridge Proficiency Grade C or above; CAE B.
