Religion and Culture is a two-year Master´s degree programme offered by the Faculty's Graduate School of Theology and Religious Studies (ThRS). In the best traditions of studentship in the humanities, teaching and research are closely related as the programme is taught by senior professors of the three research groups of the Faculty's Centre for Religious Studies:
These groups have an outstanding national and international reputation in the fields of religious studies and theology.
The Research Master is offered especially to highly qualified and motivated students, both foreign and Dutch, who have a wide-ranging interest in religion and who wish to study in a challenging academic environment that stimulates personal ambition and development . Admission to the programme is competitive and selective.
The programme equips and prepares advanced students to carry out postgraduate academic research in the PhD programme of the Faculty´s Graduate School of Theology and Religious Studies (ThRS) or in that of any other School. It offers a thorough training in the theories and methods of the various subdisciplines of theology and/or of religious studies, focusing on skills, knowledge and understanding.

The core modules
The aim of the core modules is to provide you with a general theoretical and methodological framework, as applied to the fields of theology or religious studies and to bring you to a level of knowledge that will enable you to reflect on the theories, methods and techniques that are employed by the disciplines involved in the programme and so to achieve a deepened understanding of the terminology, perspectives and problems in these fields.
The core modules exhibit the specific research profile of the Faculty and are therefore compulsory. The modules have been distributed evenly over the first three semesters.
The optional modules
The optional modules should equip you with in-depth knowledge of specialized subjects, possibly linked to one or more languages, together with subject-specific skills and methodological knowledge. In the first semester two optional modules are offered in order to undergird your choice of the subject and design of your research traineeships.
The research traineeships
The traineeships are exclusively reserved for students of the Research Master. They are meant to offer you not only the opportunity to become more thoroughly acquainted with specialist literature, research methods, and current discussions in your field of specialization, but also to enable you to make a well-informed choice of the subject of your Thesis at the end of the third term at the very latest. On approval of the School, you may take a traineeship abroad, preferably at renowned foreign universities, colleges or schools.
The Master's thesis and the research proposal
Your thesis (25 EC) must provide substantial evidence of your mastery of research skills in identifying and defining academic problems, of familiarity with specialist literature and the ability to locate a subject, issue or topic in the context of current academic discussions in the field in question. It must also display your ability to employ effective methods for solving problems and to present the subsequent findings clearly and succinctly.
You are also required to write a research proposal (5 EC) for a PhD project on the basis of, and thus after finishing, your Thesis. On approval of the School, however, you may also write the research proposal at an earlier stage in the programme on the condition that this should enable you to meet the application requirements of a PhD position.
You are normally required to take an English Proficiency Test if you come from a non-English speaking country.
Most European Universities recognise the IELTS test.
