The MA Applied Communication enables you to develop a specialism within Communication, Culture and Media (CCM) studies in the use of communications for public relations, advertising, journalism and public communication campaigns, political communications and new technologies.

By choosing appropriate modules within the CCM postgraduate programme and by undertaking an in-depth research project, you will develop a critically and theoretically informed understanding of these areas and their social and cultural contexts. The course draws on the professional and academic expertise of the course team.

This MA will also be attractive to those seeking, or wishing to enhance careers in the fields of professional communication: PR, corporate and political communication and those with an interest in the theory, practice and analysis of professional communication and/or those with a professional or career interest in these fields.


Contents

The MA in Applied Communication looks in particular at practices and policies in PR, journalism, public, corporate and political communication and new media technologies.

By choosing specialist modules and undertaking a research project, you will develop a critical, and theoretically and historically informed understanding of these questions and contexts. You will engage with cutting-edge ideas, rigorous methods and established and new theoretical frameworks. Through this approach an expertise is developed in the analysis of a variety of media texts and artefacts and their communication practices and policies.

There are opportunities to explore contested issues in depth through seminars, to participate in open forum discussions, and to explore particular interests leading to guided research and a substantial, supervised MA research project.

This MA will attract those seeking, or enhancing, careers in professional communication, PR, corporate and political communication. It is also attractive to students interested in the analysis of professional communication and to those entering further academic study from a professional perspective.

Entry requirements

Applicants should have a good degree in a cognate subject and/or equivalent professional experience.

Appropriately qualified students may apply to be assessed by practice for some assignments by producing, for example, photographic, video or audio pieces.

Applicants whose first language is not English must have a minimum IELTS 6.5 or TOEFL 600 or equivalent.
