The Top programme Biomolecular Sciences is part of the Master's degree programme in Molecular Biology and Biotechnology. The programme will educate students at an advanced leve.
This programme is supervised by the Groningen Biomolecular Sciences and Biotechnology Institute (GBB), a research and graduate school of the Faculty of Mathematics and Natural Sciences that coordinates biomolecular and biotechnological research within the University of Groningen .
The GBB forges together over 200 researchers and it is unique in that it unites multidisciplinary research in the areas of molecular biology, genetics, biochemistry and biophysical chemistry in order to understand the structure and function of proteins related to the functioning of a living cell in its environment. If this field of research is interesting to you, you should apply for admission to the top programme in Biomolecular Sciences at the University of Groningen.
By following the Top programme in Biomolecular Sciences students acquire top quality research competences in such a way that they become highly attractive for a research career in the area of Biomolecular Sciences. At least two research projects must be completed, while in addition a substantial obligatory part of the advanced theoretical training is part of the programme as well.
Career prospectsExcellent opportunities for graduates to continue their research at PhD level in the area of Biomolecular Sciences.
The curriculum of the Top Master Programme in Biomolecular Sciences takes two years. The first year consists of obligatory lectures, self study, and exercises, as follows:
Weeks 1 up to 2 are available for getting familiar with Bioinformatics and the research field of GBB by entering the GBB Introduction Course.
Weeks 3 up to 23 comprise the Advanced courses and time for Self study to remedy any deficiencies.
From week 24 time is available for 2 Thesis projects (the research projects), Electives . In this period, the student will also: a) write an Essay , b) prepare a Colloquium that will be presented at a minisymposium, and c) write a Research proposal.
Advanced courses
The advanced courses define the character and scope of the Master Programme in Biomolecular Sciences. It consists of following 7 modules of advanced education, which all are obligatory for topmaster students:
* Introduction Course & Introduction to Membrane Proteins (2 EC)
* Biogenesis and assembly of membrane protein complexes (5 EC)
* Advances in signal transduction (5 EC)
* Genomics, proteomics, and bioinformatics of membrane proteins (5 EC)
* Advanced protein crystallography (5 EC)
* Modelling and molecular dynamics of membranes and proteins (5 EC)
* Catalysis and engineering of (membrane) proteins (5 EC)
Electives
To complete the programme, a student may spend 8 EC on courses that are individually selected. For the electives programme, also courses can be selected belonging to Biomolecular Sciences that are not part of the core curriculum. These electives can be chosen from the following list:
* Practical Biomolecular Research Skills (4 EC) with e.g. spectroscopic techniques, VMT- and isotope courses)
* Protein Crystallography (4 EC)
* DNA Microarraying (4 EC)
* High-Throughput Screening (4 EC)
* Electron Microscopy (4 EC)
* Confocal Fluorescence Microscopy (4 EC)
* Suitable courses from the topmaster programs Nanoscience, Evolutionary Biology, of Medical and Pharmaceutical Drug Innovation and Masterclass from the GBB Ph.D. training programme.
With the approval of the Examination Committee, a student may choose one or two modules on top of the total study load of 120 EC. Thesis projectsEach student must conduct two research projects (totalling at least 55 EC). The first research project (30 EC at minimum) must be embedded within the Groningen Biomolecular Sciences and Biotechnology Institute (GBB) and supervised by a professor from GBB. Each research project must take place under direct responsibility and supervision of a professor and may only be started after explicit approval by the Examination Committee. The second research project (20 EC at minimum) may be conducted within a different research group of the aforementioned institute, but may also be conducted at another research institution after approval of the Examination Committee. In that latter case, an internal supervisor (a professor associated with the GBB) will guard the progress of the project and decide on the final grading of the project, in correspondence with the external supervisor at the institute where the work is done.
Each research project consists of four parts, which are examined separately:
* a theoretical study of the research question and a work plan, which is judged on basis of a written report and a presentation in a research group meeting;
* participation in Capita Selecta;
* practical work, which is judged in a mid-term evaluation;
* a final report that has to be written in the form of a scientific article and an oral presentation to a broad audience.
