MSc in Sustainable Chemical Engineering is the newest full-time course in the School and this will be the fourth year that the course has been running. An aim of the MSc in Sustainable Engineering is to provide graduate scientists and engineers with a coherent understanding of chemical engineering, which can be applied to sustainable design and manufacturing, combining a sound theoretical grasp of the subject with practical awareness and experience.

As postgraduates you should be capable of becoming professional engineers in industry or alternatively follow a route into a research or academic career. The course provides training in the concepts of sustainable development and the role of Chemical Engineering

This degree programme is a one year taught course for graduate scientists and engineers with emphasis on training in advanced process and material engineering; energy systems; including fuel cells and process intensification skills for a sustainable future. The course has been designed to meet the growing need for engineers skilled in materials and process engineering.

Contents

MSc students take compulsory modules (to a value of 110 credits) and select a further 10-credit module (either chemical engineering or energy management, depending on the subject of their first degree). They then undertake a four-month research project leading to a dissertation (60 credits). Diploma students take modules to the value of 120 credits.
Modules typically include: renewable energy – hydrogen and fuel cell technology; sustainable industry; fuel cell systems; process intensification; sustainable design and manufacture; modelling for materials sustainability and processing; nanomaterials; clean technology applications; sustainable processing energy and materials technology; renewable energy – biomass and waste technology; and methodology and planning research. Teaching methods include lectures, seminars, student-directed learning, laboratory work, extended course work and tutorials. Assessment is by written examination, course work and, for MSc students, a dissertation based on a project conducted in association with industry or one of the research groups.

You are normally required to take an English Proficiency Test if you come from a non-English speaking country.

Most European Universities recognise the IELTS test.
