This degree programme is recognised by the Joint Board of Moderators (ICE, IStructE, CIHT, IHE) as meeting requirements for Further Learning for a Chartered Engineer (CEng) for candidates who have already acquired an Accredited CEng (Partial) BEng (Hons) or an Accredited IEng (Full) BEng/BSc (Hons) undergraduate first degree. The programme is also accredited by the Geological Society (GeolSoc).
For the MSc you complete compulsory modules (100 credits) taught as block modules, followed by a research project written up as a dissertation (80 credits). For the Diploma you take taught modules to a total of 80 credits, drawn from those offered on the MSc programme, together with a 40-credit dissertation.
The programme leads you sequentially from ‘pure’ science through to its environmental applications. Initial modules present key chemical and microbiological concepts, emphasise the importance of microbial catalysis in low-temperature geochemistry, discuss the origins, toxicity and fates of organic and inorganic pollutants, and provide analytical skills. Further modules include: groundwater assessment; the uses of micro-organisms for remedial purposes; the management of contaminated land; the uses of biogeochemical tools for pollution control; and the commercial aspects of the environment business.
Dissertation projects may be field and laboratory based, or involve desk studies or computer modelling. You might work within one of our established research groups, or in collaboration with an industrial partner. You will be encouraged to publish your results.
Compulsory modules:
CEG8105 Solid Waste Management
CEG8601 Research Methods
CEG8602 Inorganic Analytical Geochemistry
CEG8603 Organic Analytical Geochemistry
CEG8604 Introduction to Microbiology, Microbial Physiology and Biogeochemistry
CEG8605 Aqueous Geochemistry
CEG8606 Sources, Fates and Control of Pollutants
CEG8699 MSc Project and Dissertation in Geosciences
