Power Distribution Engineering, MSc; PGDip; PGCert – (M.Sc.)

The programme is delivered in a novel modular form, mixing direct teaching with distance learning. Each module comprises two days of direct face-to-face teaching, and the equivalent of a further three days’ teaching delivered as distance learning. Another important feature of the programme is the use of module leaders and lecturers from industry to provide you with an appreciation of real-life issues and problems in an area of industry where skills are in great demand.

Full-time MSc students complete eight modules (120 credits) and an individual project with dissertation (60 credits). Part-time MSc students complete four modules (60 credits) in Year 1, four modules (60 credits) in Year 2, and an individual project with dissertation (60 credits) in Year 3. Part-time Diploma students take four modules (60 credits) in the first year and four modules (60 credits) in their second year of study. Part-time Certificate students take four compulsory modules (60 credits).

All students take compulsory modules (60 credits) in: fundamentals of distribution engineering; asset management, maintenance and condition monitoring; network design and automation; and fundamentals of distribution engineering. Optional modules for MSc and Diploma students include: earthing; protection of distribution networks; power transformers; power cables; overhead lines; switchgear technology; and distributed generation.

Assessment of each module is by written examination and module assignment. The MSc dissertation is based on a project conducted in association with one of the School’s research groups.
