The field of work of a medical pharmaceutical researcher covers a broad range of activities, including searching for the cause of a disease and how it develops in a patient or model system, finding substances that can influence this process, designing effective medication and investigating how medicines are used in actual practice.
The field of medical pharmaceutical sciences is multidisciplinary, focusing on the causes and pathophysiology of diseases and intervention with drugs. Within the programme, researchers from the natural sciences (pharmacists, biologists, chemists and mathematicians) cooperate with medical scientists (both researchers and doctors) in training young medical pharmaceutical scientists. Various research groups are involved. Students of this programme can focus on fundamental or applied research, or a combination of both. The degree programme thus offers many possibilities.
The Master´s degree programme in Medical Pharmaceutical Sciences provides excellent preparation for a career in research. Researchers find jobs in a variety of organizations, including universities, academic and general hospitals, governmental and semigovernmental institutions and the pharmaceutical or biomedical industries. This degree programme can also serve as good preparation for other jobs at an academic level, as during the independent research projects you not only learn how to conduct research but also how to cooperate, communicate (orally and in writing) and present and defend your own ideas.
In addition to research, graduates also find jobs in companies, government institutions and social organizations. This often involves linking medical pharmaceutical science to, for example, a business or policy strategy. Examples not only include various positions within the pharmaceutical industry, but also institutions such as the Medicines Evaluation Board, an organization that deals with the admission of drugs to the Dutch Market, or the Ministry of Health, Welfare and Sport.
The two-year degree programme (120 ECTS) has two variants: the research variant and the policy & management variant. The research variant focuses entirely on research within the medical pharmaceutical sciences. The policy & management variant comprises one year of research and one year aimed at the development of policy and management-related understanding and skills. Students choose one of these variants during their first year.
During the programme, all students conduct at least one independent research project of a minimum of 28 weeks, usually within the context of an ongoing research project. The Introduction to Medical Pharmaceutical Sciences module is also compulsory. This module provides an overview of medical pharmaceutical sciences and discusses various topics that are important in research, such as Good Research Practice or research financing.
The master´s programme is research oriented. It has two variants: a research (P-) variant and a policy & management (M-) variant. In their first year all students conduct a research project. Thereafter, they choose either to continue in the P-variant or to enroll in the M-variant.
Research variant
he P-variant focuses entirely on research to prepare for a career in academia or other research institutes. The study programme therefore mainly consists of research projects, which focus on learning about conducting research by actually doing it. Students will not only independently perform experiments in the laboratory or the field, they will also go through the whole process of conducting science developing skills such as searching for and studying scientific literature, formulating hypotheses, designing and performing experiments, and presenting results.
Within the P-variant students may choose a free programme or may specialize in adverse drug reactions by choosing the toxicology and drug disposition specialization.
Policy & management variant
The M-variant comprises one year of research and one year aimed at the development of policy and management-related understanding and skills to prepare for a career in a company, consultancy or policy organization. This variant is especially for students who are not only interested in science but also in the social and commercial aspects of scientific developments and products. Additional training in interactions with other disciplines, communication with non-scientists and general management skills is also part of this variant.
