You take a selection of taught modules (100 credits) and undertake a research project and dissertation (80 credits). Compulsory modules (70 credits) may include: research skills; marine power transmission; marine machinery systems; ship performance at sea; ship propulsion; marine electrical power systems; and marine electrical propulsion. Optional modules (30 credits) typically include: optimal marine design; marine electro-technology; data analysis and interpretation; marine management technology II; surveying ships and offshore installations; and marine transport and economics.
The programme is also available with a Preliminary Year, which is designed for students who have a qualification from a technical college rather than an Honours degree. Typically, you select one module (20 credits) from: marine engineering design; marine design; offshore design; and small craft design. You also take optional modules (70 modules) and complete a project and report (30 credits).

Normally an upper-second class (2.1) Honours degree, or equivalent, in engineering or another relevant subject. Applicants whose first language is not English require IELTS 6.5, TOEFL 90 (Internet-based) or 577 (paper-based), or equivalent.
