You take a selection of taught modules (100 credits) and undertake a research project and dissertation (80 credits).
Compulsory modules (70 credits) may include: marine production technology; theory of plates and grillages; ship performance; ship propulsion; marine transport and economics; advanced hydrodynamics; and research skills.
You also select optional modules (30 credits) from a list which typically includes: design and analysis of marine transport systems; structural response analysis; optimal marine design; marine management technology; high-speed and advanced craft; and design and analysis of marine transport systems.
The programme is also available with a Preliminary Year, which is designed for students who have a qualification from a technical college rather than an Honours degree. Typically, you select one module (20 credits) from: marine engineering design; marine design; offshore design; and small craft design. You also take optional modules (70 modules) and complete a project and report (30 credits).

Requirements
Normally an upper-second (2.1) class Honours degree, or equivalent, in engineering or another relevant subject. Applicants whose first language is not English require IELTS 6.5, TOEFL 90 (Internet-based) or 577 (paper-based), or equivalent.
