You take a selection of taught modules (100 credits) and undertake a research project and dissertation (80 credits). You complete compulsory modules (70 credits) that cover: theory of plates and grillages; research skills; structural integrity of pipelines; advanced offshore design; marine fluid dynamics; and structural response analysis. A further 30 credits are selected from a list which typically includes: marine production technology; optimal marine design; marine management technology; and surveying ships and offshore installations.
The programme is also available with a Preliminary Year, which is designed for students who have a qualification from a technical college rather than an Honours degree. Typically, you select one module (20 credits) from: marine engineering design; marine design; offshore design; and small craft design. You also take optional modules (70 credits) and complete a project and report (30 credits).

Normally an upper-second class (2.1) Honours degree, or equivalent, in engineering or another relevant subject. Applicants whose first language is not English require IELTS 6.5, TOEFL 90 (Internet-based) or 577 (paper-based), or equivalent.
