There are almost 300 graduates from this programme successfully working throughout the tropics for non-governmental organisations, companies and national and international agencies. The programme provides you with an advanced understanding of the key factors that underpin effective coastal management including cultural, legal, political, scientific and technological dimensions.

For the MSc you take compulsory modules (90 credits), optional modules (10 credits), and complete a research project (80 credits). For the Diploma you take compulsory modules (80 credits), optional modules (10 credits) and a study in coastal management (30 credits). Compulsory modules typically include: critical appraisal of coastal production systems; principles and practice of integrated coastal management; environmental research skills; fisheries resources assessment and management; and coastal governance.

Optional modules may include: project management application and environmental impact assessment. The programme is supported by inputs from other academic institutions, industry and government and non-governmental organisations. Hands-on training is provided through supervised independent study for the main MSc research project (four months), lectures, practical classes and a wide range of case studies using real-world examples.

Formative and peer assessment is used extensively, and a logbook is used to document progress across the taught part of the programme. Extra costs may be incurred for fieldwork as part of this degree; however, some financial support may be available.
