In an ever-demanding world market place the need to be competitive in manufacturing for companies is essential. Businesses are re-organising themselves in response to the challenges and demands of the twenty first century and must be flexible and responsive to the changing market requirements. Manufacturing companies must produce high quality, cost effective products in quick response time to customer demand. In order to do this, successful manufacturing companies must embrace the skill and expertise of engineering, business and management. The current focus in manufacturing is to eliminate waste through lean production systems. This is then supported by the application of current technology in materials, processing techniques and information technology to attain a competitive advantage.
