Location of University of Groningen

The Department of Physics at the University of Groningen offers a training for a master's degree which is accessible for foreign students who have already a solid background in physics or applied physics at bachelor level, but who are eager to enlarge their knowledge and experience to obtain a master's degree in an environment of modern physics research.

The master's degree (MSc. Applied Physics) offered by the University of Groningen is equivalent to the Dutch academic degree of 'ingenieur' (ir.).

The Master´s degree programme in Applied Physics is open to students who already have a solid background in physics or applied physics, and who are eager to expand their knowledge and experience to obtain a Master´s degree in a modern applied physics research environment. The programme focuses on material engineering and device physics.

The Master´s degree programme in Applied Physics is primarily meant for students who want to become researchers and developers in an industrial environment. However, many graduates continue on to a PhD project after obtaining their Master´s degree, either in Groningen or elsewhere.

In the Master´s degree programme the student acquires skills as a researcher in applied physics. Teamwork, communication and presentation are also important qualities to be developed. In many cases considerable IT skills are developed as well. These general competences, together with the analytical skills typical of researchers, guarantee that graduates are widely employable. Most applied physicists find jobs in an entrepreneurial environment where a strong background in physics is necessary.

Contents

The master programme in Applied Physics constitutes the natural continuation of the bachelor programme in Applied Physics. However admission to the programme can also be obtained by bachelors graduated in a related field (e.g. physics), be it that there may be some individual adaptations to the programme. This also holds for foreign students: the actual programme will be constituted on an individual basis depending on the contents of bachelor programme followed in the home country. The master programme in Applied Physics has a nominal duration of two years and is constituted of 120 european credit points (120 e.c.)

In the master programme in Applied Physics two profiles can be distinghished:

1. Applied Physics

* Course work on Applied Physics: 35 ECTS
* Course work on Business and Management: 10 ECTS
* Internship in Industry: 30 ECTS
* Applied Physics research project: 45 ECTS

2. Information and Informatics in Physics, Astronomy and Space Research

* Course work on Applied Physics: 35 ECTS
* Coursework on Instrumentation and Informatics: 25 ECTS
* Internship in Industry: 20 ECTS
* Applied Physics research project: 40 ECTS
