The main focus of the programme is the exploration of new drugs from their conception in the laboratory to their application and testing and subsequent industrial production.
The programme consists of taught elements and research preparation (120 credits) and a research project and dissertation (60 credits).
The main themes include: current theory/practice in chemotherapy; organic synthesis for drug targets; modern methods in drug discovery; host–guest chemistry; drug metabolism and toxicology.
Additional topics include: data processing and presentation, and technology transfer.
We are an ideal setting for this programme as our research strengths lie in pharmaceutical areas, and we have strong links with research groups in the pharmaceutical industry and Faculty of Medical Sciences (for example, the Northern Institute for Cancer Research and the School of Biomedical Sciences).
