The programme is recognised by the Economic and Social Research Council (ESRC) under its 1+3 system (Master’s plus PhD) for postgraduate studies. This provides UK students with a route to ESRC-funded doctoral study. This programme is also accredited by the Royal Town Planning Institute (RTPI).
The programme is structured in such a way that you study alongside PhD and MPhil students in the School and Faculty. You will also join the large body of taught postgraduate students in the School when studying the optional modules.
You take 70 credits of compulsory modules in research methods and skills development, delivered by the Humanities and Social Sciences Graduate School. Modules typically include: introduction to information skills; thinking about research; qualitative methodology in the arts, humanities and social sciences; introduction to quantitative methods; and dissertation preparation.
More specialised subject modules (50 credits) that relate to your personal research interests are delivered by the School of Architecture, Planning & Landscape. These optional modules are chosen from a wide range of subjects enabling you to customise your programme. Examples of general patterns or themes of study include: planning for climate change; landscape planning and environmental assessment; urban design, regeneration and development; housing, environment and planning; overseas development and environmental planning; environmental conservation and management. Optional modules from other academic schools within the University can also be taken.
You also complete a dissertation (60 credits) which will enhance and enable you to demonstrate your research skills and training in planning and environmental research.
Staff in the School involved in the teaching of this programme are research-active specialists, many of whom also have experience in practice and are experienced supervisors and examiners of doctoral level research students. This has considerable benefits for those students wishing to carry on to PhD at Newcastle as it provides opportunities to develop research proposals in close association with potential supervisors.
