Town Planning – (M.Sc.)

The MSc consists of taught modules (120 credits) and a dissertation (60 credits). Most modules are assessed solely by course work and, in some instances, presentations.

During Semester 1 a series of 10-credit modules provides a comprehensive introduction to the theories, methods, structures and techniques of planning. Teaching methods include lectures, seminars, group discussions and workshops. Team work skills are developed through the group project on sustainable development (20 credits). Other typical compulsory modules include: planning frameworks; and reflexive practitioner.

In Semester 2, the emphasis shifts towards synthesising the knowledge acquired in Semester 1 and further developing planning and team working skills. Typical modules include: economics of development; and planning theory. A major part of this semester is the project-based module, spatial strategies (20 credits). The module includes a field trip to Europe where you have the opportunity to develop a comprehensive redevelopment strategy for a local area drawing on the knowledge acquired in Semesters 1 and 2 and from examples and case studies that have a European context.

During the programme you also develop specialist knowledge and skills in one of the following areas: conservation and the city; regenerating places; planning in developing countries; issues in landscape planning and sustainability; or cities, security and resilience. In Semester 1, you undertake a lecture-based module in your chosen subject and this is followed by an individual project in Semester 2.
