This programme prepares you for the role of art educator and uses a range of pedagogical practices to enable you to work in informal educational settings including museums, galleries, universities, community centres and other ‘alternative’ educational venues.
You take three compulsory modules (60 credits) which cover: issues and ideas; management; communication and interpretation. You also take two specialist modules (40 credits): art museum and gallery education 1 and 2, which cover topics such as: the relationship between art galleries and visual art practices; changing practices in gallery and art museum education; learning theories and their use in the gallery and art museum environment; the relationship between ‘education’ and ‘curating’; critical issues in the discourses surrounding visual art practices, exhibition and display; marketing, publicity and audience development; new trends in commissioning art through educational programming and fostering cultural diversity in public programming. This culminates in the design and delivery of a student-led educational event hosted by the BALTIC Centre for Contemporary Art.
You then undertake a tailored eight-week placement in an art museum/gallery (20 credits) and finally a piece of individual research for presentation as a 12-15,000-word dissertation (60 credits). Students enrolled in the Postgraduate Diploma (PGDip) complete all of the taught modules and the work placement, but not the dissertation.
Compulsory modules:
ICS8001 Issues and Ideas
ICS8002 Management
ICS8003 Communication and Interpretation
ICS8015 Museum, Gallery and Heritage Placement
ICS8022 Art Museum and Gallery Education 1
ICS8023 Art Museum and Gallery Education 2
ICS8099 Dissertation
Students enrolled in the Postgraduate Diploma (PGDip) complete all of the taught modules and the work placement, but not the dissertation.
You are normally required to take an English Proficiency Test.
Most European Universities recognise the IELTS test.
Take testA minimum of an upper-second-class (2.1) Honours degree, or an international equivalent, in a relevant art-related subject at university. These include: art history, visual studies, fine art, craft, design and photography. Basic familiarity with art history is particularly important because you will be required to work confidently with art historical concepts and concerns as they pertain to the art museum and gallery context. It is not necessary for you to have a full degree in an art-related subject, but it should be a significant component of your degree. We also consider applications from professionals with considerable work experience in the art museum/gallery sector. Ideally you should have some gallery or museum experience, for example as a volunteer.
Applicants whose first language is not English require IELTS 6.5 with at least 6.0 in writing, TOEFL 90 (Internet-based) or 577 (paper-based), or equivalent.
