You take three compulsory modules (60 credits) which cover: issues and ideas; management; communication and interpretation. These are followed by two specialist modules including collections management (20 credits) and one of the following optional modules: archaeology; history; natural sciences; interpretation and exhibitions; art curatorship 2; and heritage education and interpretation 2 (20 credits).
All optional modules correspond to curatorial disciplines found in many museums, and include a practical project, often working closely with museum professionals in museums in the North East. There is an eight-week placement in a museum (20 credits) and finally a piece of individual research for presentation as a 12–15,000-word dissertation (60 credits). Teaching emphasises a practical approach, dealing with real objects, museums and situations.
Students enrolled in the Postgraduate Diploma (PGDip) complete all the taught modules and the work placement but not the dissertation.
