The MSc Forensic Psychology provides students with a thorough grounding in the theory, themes, issues and practical skills that are central to the practice and application of psychological research into behaviour relevant to crime and forensic settings. The programme is accredited by the British Psychological Society as fulfilling the requirements of Stage 1 towards Chartered Forensic Psychologist status.
The course was designed to cover the BPS Division of Forensic Psychology's (DFP) core curriculum, which was written as a standard by which to judge forensic psychology masters degree courses. The course has been commended for its breadth of coverage and relevance.
The MSc Forensic Psychology provides career opportunities in a variety of forensic settings, such as the prison, probation and police services, local government and other agencies. Expected jobs are varied but may include Assistant Forensic Psychologist, Crime Scene Analyst, Prison Psychologist, Lecturer in Forensic Psychology, Researcher, Police Analyst, Police Officer and Probation Officer.
You will complete the ten modules listed below. The first five 10-credit modules cover the theoretical basis of forensic psychology across a range of settings, through all stages of the criminal justice process, i.e. from investigation to punishment and throughcare, and as applied to a broad range of crimes. A double (20-credit) module provides an overview of a key aspect of forensic practice, risk assessment and risk management which includes offender behaviour programmes. Two further 10-credit modules are particular features of this course and explore the legal process (taught by the Coventry Law School), and practice and application in forensic psychology (involving a number of guest speakers who are practitioners in forensic settings). A triple (30-credit) module covers advanced research methods including both qualitative and qualitative methods, preparing students for the final module (60 credits), which is an independent research dissertation/project.
The course offers a part-time and full-time route. Full-time students attend university two days per week for one academic year. Part-time students attend one day per week for two academic years. The course begins at the end of September each year and is completed in mid September, either one year later for full-time students, or two years later for part-time students. Students who do not choose to continue the full MSc may obtain a postgraduate Certificate in Forensic Psychology if they successfully complete the equivalent of 5 single modules (60 credits), or a Diploma in Forensic Psychology if they successfully complete the equivalent of 10 single modules (120 credits) of the course (e.g. if they do not complete the dissertation).
You are normally required to take an English Proficiency Test.

Take testApplicants will normally possess an honours degree in psychology at first class or 2:1 level and must be eligible for the Graduate Basis for Chartered Membership (GBC, previously the Graduate Basis for Registration, or GBR) with the British Psychological Society (normally achieved by the completion of an appropriately accredited UK undergraduate degree in Psychology, please see the BPS website for more information - including a list of accredited courses and opportunities for achieving GBC if undergraduate study was completed outside the UK or via a non-accredited UK course).
Relevant work experience will also be taken into consideration. Applicants for whom English is not their first language must also be able to demonstrate IETLS 6.5.
