The MA consists of compulsory and optional taught modules (120 credits) and a dissertation or a software portfolio, involving the design, production and evaluation of teaching materials (60 credits).

The modules you can choose are informed by your level of teaching experience. If you are an experienced teacher you take modules covering: TESOL theory and practice; research methods in applied linguistics; and choose from a range of specialist modules.
If you have little or no teaching experience your modules may include: an introduction to TESOL; core issues in second language acquisition; and research methods in applied linguistics.

You then choose from a range of specialist modules such as: computer-assisted language learning (CALL); discourse analysis; second language acquisition; TESOL for young learners; thinking skills in ELT; language testing and assessment; cross-cultural communication; teacher development; English as a lingua franca; the English writing system; bilingualism and bilingual education; and counselling.
