The School of Physics offers a Master´s degree programme which is open to foreign students who already have a solid background in physics and are eager to expand their knowledge and experience in an environment of modern physics research. The goal of the Master´s degree programme in Physics is to train excellent researchers in the specializations materials science, nuclear physics, isotope physics or theoretical physics.
The Master´s programme in Physics is primarily meant for students who want to become researchers. Most graduates will proceed with a PhD research project after their Master´s programme, either in Groningen or elsewhere. Nevertheless, many physicists who have trained as researchers will find jobs that are less explicitly oriented towards research. This is because training as a researcher in physics also develops general competences that make graduates highly versatile.
During the Master´s degree programme, teamwork, communication and presentation are important qualities. In many cases considerable IT skills are developed. In practice, physics graduates can be found in consultancy firms, in process management, in commercial positions, in financial jobs or as teachers.
The master programme in Physics constitutes the natural continuation of the bachelor programme in Physics. However admission to the programme can also be obtained by bachelors graduated in a related field (e.g. applied physics, astronomy), be it that there may be some individual adaptations to the programme.
This also holds for foreign students: the actual programme will be composed on an individual basis depending on the contents of bachelor programme followed in the home country. The master programme in Physics has a nominal duration of two years and is constituted of 120 european credit points (120 ECTS).
In the MSc programme a number of profiles are distinguished:
Each of the profiles contains obligatory and elective courses specific for the profile (appr. 60 ECTS), as well as one or two research projects (appr. 60 ECTS)
Details of the programme can be found through the the link "Curriculum MSc Physcs" (see Relevant Links)
You are normally required to take an English Proficiency Test if you come from a non-English speaking country.
Most European Universities recognise the IELTS test.
