This MA programme is open to those with a good degree in Linguistics and/or English Language, or that includes some study of those subjects, or another appropriate subject. It includes an exceptionally wide range of options and will appeal to those whose interests lie in theoretical and general linguistics, descriptive English linguistics or applied linguistics.
The programme aims to equip you with the research skills necessary to undertake independent study in linguistics. You have the opportunity to gain advanced knowledge in a wide range of linguistic fields, including theoretical and general linguistics, descriptive linguistics (whether focusing on English or on other languages), and applied linguistics.
The distinguishing feature of this programme is its extraordinary flexibility and range of options. You take modules to a value of 180 credits, consisting of a dissertation (60 credits), compulsory modules (40 credits), and optional modules (80 credits).
Compulsory modules cover: research methods in language and linguistics; English sentence structure; phonetics and phonology. For the optional modules, you choose one module (20 credits) on a syntactic topic and one module (20 credits) on a phonological topic. You then take two modules (40 credits) from a selection covering theoretical, descriptive, and applied linguistics. Further modules to the value of 20 credits are finally selected from topics which typically include evolutionary linguistics; computational linguistics; issues in variation and change in the British Isles; child language acquisition; second language acquisition, and lexical innovation; with the advice and permission of the Degree Programme Director, special options are available in English language or applied linguistics.
You are normally required to take an English Proficiency Test.
Most European Universities recognise the IELTS test.
