At the centre of the MA are the writing workshops in prose, poetry or scriptwriting (60 credits) through which, together with individual consultations, you are helped to develop your own writing. Optional workshops (20 credits) are offered on a range of topics including writing for children; text and public art; poetry and translation; writing for radio; and memoir writing. You also take a compulsory life of writing module (20 credits), which will enable you to reflect on your professional career as a writer.

These practice-based modules are complemented by two more optional academic modules from a list that might include: the short story; text and public art: and reading and writing poetry (20 credits). You may either submit a portfolio of your own work or write a dissertation on an appropriate literary topic (60 credits).

The MA draws on its strong links with the vibrant literary culture of the North East, and to organisations such as Northern Stage, Seven Stories – The Centre for Children’s Books, New Writing North, and Bloodaxe Books. Practice-based workshops are taught by established writers, including Andrew Crumey, Laura Fish, Tina Gharavi, W N Herbert, Jackie Kay, Alison Light, Jack Mapanje, Sean O’Brien, Peter Reynolds, Jo Shapcott and Margaret Wilkinson.
