Location of Newcastle University
The focus is on contemporary developments in the European Union in terms of its politics, law and policies. You take two compulsory modules (40 credits); four optional modules (80 credits); and complete a dissertation (60 credits).
Compulsory modules cover: integration in Europe; and theories and approaches in the study of politics. Typical optional modules include; international relations theory; the politics of global change; theories and theorists of international political economy; global justice and human rights; war, terrorism and peace - ethical perspectives; the rise of China; doing political research; and critical geopolitics.
Teaching is seminar based and most modules are assessed by a 4,000-word research paper on a topic chosen by the student in consultation with the module leader. Students complete a 12,000-word dissertation during the summer.

An upper-second-class (2.1) Honours degree or above, or international equivalent, in politics/international studies or a related discipline. Other qualifications or relevant professional experience are also considered. Applicants whose first language is not English require IELTS 6.5, TOEFL 90 (Internet-based) or 577 (paper-based), or equivalent.
