This programme covers the military, social (public and private) and political dimensions of conflict and its impact upon national and European cultures. The history of culture and mentality is explored alongside political and military history to develop a comprehensive understanding of the ways in which conflicts have been prepared, imagined, lived, represented, remembered and narrated. You take compulsory modules (80 credits) which cover: conflict in European history; research methods in history; dissertation preparation; conflict in European history case studies.
Optional modules (40 credits), of which language learning is a compulsory component, are then chosen from a list that typically covers: independent study project in European History; CLL Italian, Greek or Russian; French Language; German language; Spanish language. The taught modules are delivered through a combination of lectures, seminars, individual tutorials and self-directed learning.
You then complete a dissertation on a chosen period of a specific European country (60 credits).

Normally an upper-second-class (2.1) Honours degree, or international equivalent, in history, or a Joint or Combined Honours degree with history. Other degree qualifications may be considered where appropriate, especially where essay-based work formed the written component of the undergraduate programme (for example, in literature or geography); or from a related evidence-based discipline (for example, in politics or law).
Applicants whose first language is not English require IELTS 6.5 (with a minimum of 7.0 in writing) or equivalent. Please note that there is no route into the programme via pre-sessional English language courses.
