This advanced-level programme offers a unique opportunity to study key historical themes of the entire western hemisphere: Latin America, the Caribbean and North America. It allows you to explore comparative history, as well as more specialised work on a particular place that interests you. It is an excellent stepping stone towards a PhD, but will also suit students who want to study to improve their transferable skills and career prospects, or simply out of personal interest. Although it covers aspects of Latin American history, no specific language skills are required.

You take compulsory modules (60 credits), further core and optional modules (20 credits each) and write a dissertation (60 credits). Compulsory modules cover: advanced themes in the history of the Americas; the practice of history; research methods in history; dissertation preparation training. Further core and optional modules may include: the southern US civil rights movement; the ‘Indian’ problem in Latin America; intellectual and political thought in Brazil and Hispano-America. You will also have the chance to take a module in another programme in the School, or another School, that is of interest and relevance (e.g. a module in politics, sociology, or English). You may wish to incorporate one or more Independent Study modules into your programme, allowing you maximum flexibility to pursue your own interests. It is also possible to study a foreign language (optionally) as part of your skills enhancement, at a range of levels from beginners to advanced.
