You undertake research training provided through the ESRC-approved Social Sciences Training Programme in the Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences. This is complemented by subject-specific training in applied research skills, and in environmental law and policy within the Law School. The programme is ‘portable’ in that it can be taken by any student intending to go on to PhD study, whether at Newcastle or elsewhere, and provides the initial research training element of any 1+3 programme (Master’s degree + PhD).
You take modules to a value of 180 credits, including a dissertation submitted at the end of the summer semester (60 credits). Modules typically include: applied research methods in law; foundations of environmental law and policy; thinking about research; dissertation preparation; introduction to qualitative methods; introduction to quantitative methods.
Instead of foundations of environmental law and policy, one of the following alternative modules may be undertaken with the Degree Programme Director’s approval: European environmental law; science, law and climate change; environmental law and environmental rights; planning law and environmental impact assessment.
Assessment of modules is by course work essays and written examinations, and most classes are taught in seminar groups.
You are normally required to take an English Proficiency Test.
Most European Universities recognise the IELTS test.
Take testNormally an upper-second-class Honours degree, or an international equivalent, in law or a wide range of subject areas including: business, finance, politics, environmental science and geography. Applicants whose first language is not English require IELTS 6.5 overall (with at least 6.5 in writing), TOEFL 90 (Internet-based) or 577 (paper-based), or equivalent.
In some instances it may be possible to offer a place to an applicant with an IELTS score of 6.5 overall (but at least 6.0 in writing) or equivalent, subject to satisfactory completion of a 10-week pre-sessional English language course available at INTO Newcastle University.
