It is a post-initial master: an advanced programme aimed at students who have already obtained a Master's degree or its equivalent. Academic training in ecclesiastical law aims at a thorough study of canon law, as part of which additional training in theology for jurists and additional training in law for theologians is required.
The study of canon law is organised as a second cycle or licentiate programme. At least a first cycle training or a candidature in juridical or theological or religious sciences is a prerequisite. The possession or acquisition of a licentiate degree in at least one of the above mentioned sciences is recommended.
As a rule, two years of study are required for training in canon law. The programme of each of those years can be pursued on a half time basis. In such an event, the student must register for half a study year.
The degree of doctor in can law can be obtained in addition to the licentiate programme.
