This programme aims to enhance your skills in the critical analysis of the underlying language of film. It seeks to provide you with advanced knowledge of the theoretical and historical aspects of film in a range of national and transnational contexts, and to develop and widen your knowledge of film as both a medium and an aspect of wider cultural histories.
You are also provided with training in a range of research methodologies specific to the study of cultural objects in general and film in particular, and a range of research skills including critical and selective data-gathering, archive work, synthesis of complex information, comparative analysis, bibliographical skills, and the application of information and communications technologies. According to module choice, the programme also aims to provide you with the knowledge and experience of film practice, incorporating film production and film exhibition.
Compulsory modules (60 credits) typically include: approaches to film history and theory; screen aesthetics; researching film; postgraduate research methods; and dissertation preparation (or an extended essay for the Diploma).
You also take optional modules (60 credits) from a wide range which may include: film noir - sexuality, gender and genre; the Hollywood musical; gender theory and film; contemporary French cinema; Almodóvar; recent Spanish and Mexican cinema; stars in contemporary American cinema; celluloid cities; Chinese cinema, culture and society; vampires in film; screenwriting; contemporary documentary - theory and practice; film programming and marketing; gender and sexuality in Latin American cinema. MA candidates complete a dissertation of 15-18,000 words (60 credits).
You are normally required to take an English Proficiency Test.
Most European Universities recognise the IELTS test.
Take testAn upper-second-class Honours degree or higher or an international equivalent in the arts, humanities or social sciences. Relevant professional experience (film-making, teaching film) is also considered.
Applicants whose first language is not English require an IELTS score of 6.5, TOEFL 90 (internet based) with a minimum of 6.5 in written English and a minimum of 6.0 in all other sub skills, or equivalent. There is no route into the programme via pre-sessional English language courses.
